Food Science and Technology
Food Science
Food Science draws from many disciplines such as biology, chemical engineering, and biochemistry to better understand food processes and ultimately improve food products for the general public. As the stewards of the field, food scientists study the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food. By applying their findings, they are responsible for developing the safe, nutritious foods and innovative packaging that line supermarket shelves everywhere.
Food Technology
The food you consume daily is the result of extensive food research, a systematic investigation into a variety of foods’ properties and compositions. After the initial stages of research and development comes the mass production of food products using principles of food technology. All of these interrelated fields contribute to the food industry – the largest manufacturing industry in the United States.

Externship / Career Placement
Our core commitment here at the Shular Institute is to develop future leaders of the hospitality industry, through advance live-action/hands-on hospitality training. Our future graduates will be groomed for long term success as industry leaders and entrepreneurs. While the rigor of our internal training program and core-curriculum provides the building blocks for our students, we also understand that a strong externship is vital for long-term success.
Therefore, we require that all students complete a three to six-month externship under the guidance of an approved industry host site. By partnering with strong national and international hospitality groups, we will forge an effective path into the workforce for our future graduates.
This initiative allows students to engage with our Corporate Sponsors to secure a host site for their externship prior to completion of the core-program. Students will have the ability to customize their development track, with targeted additional training for the sole purpose fulfilling their future career goals, as a pastry or restaurant chef, food truck operator or a hospitality F&B manager.
